FRANKENSTEIN OR, THE MODERN PROMETHEUS

MARY SHELLEY (1797-1851),

was the daughter of Mary Wollstonecraft, an early feminist and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, who died a few days after Mary’s birth, and Wiliam Godwin, the philosopher and thinker who raised her. She met the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1814 and married him two years later. In 1818 the couple and their children moved to Italy, where Shelley drowned in a tragic boating accident in 1822. In addition to Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s other works include Valperga, The Last Man, Lodore, and The Keepsake. She also edited her husband’s poems, essays, and letters.
